A behind the scenes look at the DJ Premiers first symphony/concerto.

DJ Premier was given Classical and began his immersion into the genre with Bruce Adolphe, a former classical music professor at Juilliard. They met at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music not far from DJ Premier’s home in NY. After learning about classical music theory, the inspirations of some of the genre’s most profound composers and how traditional pieces are structured, DJ Premier went out and bought tons of classical symphonies on vinyl to mash up his own creation. We then took that mash-up and orchestrated it for sheet music. In the first step of the actual recording process, DJ Premier partnered with Stephen Webber, a professor and conductor at the Berklee College of Music. Stephen taught Premier how to conduct and helped him in studio with the 58-piece Berklee Symphony Orchestra you hear on the track. Of all the takes, the one you hear is the “wild” version (which means they recorded it without the metronome in their headphones) DJ Premier conducted himself. Then DJ Premier brought that instrumental track back home to NY and Nas laid down his rhyme on top of it.

RE:GENERATION: DJ Premier + Classical Music

RE:GENERATION is a feature length documentary that explores the history of music through the eyes of five modern DJ/Producers. The extremely talented DJs embark on a musical odyssey to create a cutting edge electronic track inspired by one of five traditional musical genres: Jazz, R&B, Country, Classical and Rock. In addition to Skrillex working with The Doors, the project, which is actually co-produced by the Grammys, brought in DJ Premier to produce a classical track with Nas and the Berklee School of Music Orchestra; Pretty Lights, who produced a country song with Leann Rimes and Ralph Stanley; the Crystal Method, who traveled to Detroit to record an R&B track with Martha Reeves; and Mark Ronson, who collaborated with Erykah Badu, members of the Dap Kings and Trombone Shorty for a jazz tune in New Orleans. The documentary will premiere in early 2012 and will most likely be a big part of the Grammys next year.

This is the reason why Primo is one of the greatest producers EVER.

DJ Premier on Will Sessions’ “Elmatic Instrumentals”

With the impending release of “The Elmatic Instrumentals,” DJ Premier took some time to check out the new interpretations of some of his classic productions, as covered by Detroit band Will Sessions. After explaining the background behind the beat for “Memory Lane,” he’s predictably impressed with the new instrumental versions for “Represent” and “Detroit State of Mind.”

The Elmatic Instrumentals will be released worldwide on September 27 on CD, 180g Vinyl, and digital formats.

Mac Miller – Face The Facts (prod. by DJ Premier)

Off Mac’s upcoming mixtape ’92 Til Infinity which is on the way, as well as his album Blue Slide Park.  How did this happen?  I’m genuinely intrigued as to why Premo cosigned this.
